ST.GREGORIOS DAYA BHAVAN

ANOTHER UNIQUE PROJECT..........

It was over 15 years ago that the Orthodox Church of India took the bold decision of setting up St.Gregorios Balagram, Yacharam in the barren land of Deccan to take care of healthy children of leprosy patients. The success of this unique project which now houses over 100 children prompted the church leadership to venture out into another unique project, St.Gregorios Daya Bhavan, a home for the healthy children of AIDS patients.

THE BACKGROUND..........

It is estimated that there are over 4 million AIDS patients in India and this could go up to 25 million by year 2010. While a lot is being done to alleviate the suffering of AIDS patients, very little is being done to help their healthy children who could be orphans due to no fault of theirs. St.Gregorios Daya Bhavan intends to provide a healthy atmosphere for these children to grow up.

THE PROJECT........

On 16th January 2003, H.G.Geevarghese Mar Osthathios, Metropolitan of Orthodox Church dedicated to God and man St.Gregorios Daya Bhavan in a 9 acre plot at Bhaktharahalli, near Tumkur around 70 km. from Bangalore, with Very Rev.K.I.Philip Ramban as the Director and Rev.Fr. Jinesh Varkey as the Manager. 

The first batch of 8 children were accepted by H.G.Yakob Mar Irenaios and were handed over to Rev.Fr. Jinesh Varkey, during a simple function on 15th June 2003.

Presently housed in a two room building , Daya Bhavan will admit healthy children of AIDS patients irrespective of caste, creed or religion. It will provide a congenial and pleasant atmosphere for the children to grow up into healthy and responsible citizens of India.

THE TASKS AHEAD.......

Daya Bhavan is a definite and strident step for the Orthodox Church of India towards alleviating the pains of the AIDS patients and their healthy children.

The task requires prayers and support of all well-wishers.

There are urgent requirements for building and other facilities. Due to the distance from major towns, a two wheeler and four wheeler are also immediate necessities.
